If you are like me, then you might not know anything about living OFF the Grid... but I learned quickly and I have loved every minute of it.
Off Grid Island Living is Awesome!
I am from the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. Although the city might have been surrounded by corn fields, I knew nothing about farming, or living off the grid... until we moved to to Tablas Island and built our home.

It all started when we designed the house ourselves. We wanted it to be energy efficient, an open design, and easy to maintain. So basically I drew up a cube, put on a steep pitched roof, and said, "Let's get started!"

Energy Independence
We also designed our home for Solar Power. Now we have 30 solar panels and 2 inverters, plus a 5500 watt diesel generator. Lot's of Power!

Did we Need to go with Solar Power? No, but there are times that the public utility service fails. I wanted to ensure that our home had a steady source of electricity for specific reasons:
  • We always have a water supply (we pump our own water using electric pumps). People can only live up to 3 days without water.
  • Our freezers (filled with meat and other protein) don't unfreeze.
  • If someone has a fever, we have air conditioning to keep them cool.

Some of you might be asking why we haven't added Wind Power. Let me answer this as best I can. Yes, we have the wind velocity (normally 7-12 MPH daily), but unfortunately we have turbulent wind caused by trees and distant hills. Wind turbines prefer to have a steady - non turbulent - flow of wind. Even though I wanted to add them, it just wasn't going to be practical. It was actually more practical to add more solar producing equipment than it was to even consider wind.

Food Independence
We started out with a small vegetable and herb garden but now it has morphed into something that is truly amazing. Now we not only grow plenty of herbs & vegetables, but we have:
  • mangoes,
  • pineapple,
  • bananas,
  • coconut,
  • guava,
  • papaya,
  • cacao,
  • lemon,
  • lime,
  • chili,
  • coffee (www.goingnativecoffee.com)
  • star apple, and
  • dragon fruit.

We also have a variety of animals. Yes, we have the normal farm animals, like pigs, and chickens, but we also have:
  • ducks,
  • geese,
  • turkey,
  • rabbits,
  • peacocks,
  • ostrich

One our friends said, "You don't have a farm. You have a petting zoo inside a tropical park." (note: the person who said this has now just moved to Tablas, and they are building their Off Grid farm house too).
The Ocean - "E Mare, Liberta!"
My friend Michael from England would always say, "E Mare, Libertas!"
Translated from my high school Latin, it means: "From the Sea, Freedom".

I never used the work "sea". I used the word "ocean" instead. Maybe that's because the USA is bordered by oceans and England is surrounded by seas.

But he is correct, From the Sea, Freedom. I agree with Michael because living on a tropical island, we get lots of freedoms from the sea. Naturally we get the pleasure of its beauty and a cool sea breeze, but we also get many other things that relate to Off Grid Living, such as food and an excellent border.

How do we get our Food from the Sea?
I could say we go out on our boat and go fishing, but the truth is that we let the local fishermen do the fishing, and we buy it from them. This serves a few purposes:
  • The fishermen know when to fish,
  • The fishermen know where to fish,
  • It builds friendships and a symbiotic relationship with our neighbors.
Does Living OFF the Grid on a Beautiful Island sound like what you want?
If you are like us and many of our other friends from around the world who have joined us, please email us quickly. We only have about 8 hectares of farm land remaining for people who are interested.

And YES, foreigners can legally own land in the Philippines.

We look forward to seeing you and meeting more friends.

Note: My from from England who would say "E Mare, Libertas" is
Prince Michael of Sealand
