Do you know anyone who enjoys fresh Lobster, Shrimp, Calamari, and Fish?
If you said 'Yes', then I think Rose found two of the World's best places for buying the freshest and most delicious fish on the planet - Looc Port and Ginawian Beach on Tablas Island, Philippines. What makes it even more special are the friendly fishermen and their families who help you with their selection.
The other morning Rose ventured to the undiscovered beaches of Ginawian, and she was immediately greeted by several playful children enjoying the morning surf. The kids thinking Rose was another kid - Yes, Rose looks like a little kid - asked her to join them in playing games in the water. With a smile, Rose shook her head no and suggested another time. Unaffected by her choice, the kids went back to their laughing and splashing games in the turquoise water.
Enjoying the sea breeze, Rose heard a soft voice from behind a coconut tree - 'Magandang Umaga' - Good Morning. To Rose's delight, it was an adorable shy, little girl - apparently to small to play with the other kids in the water.
'Kumustaka?' - How are you?
And Rose shared a smile with the shy, little girl.
'I am good,' she smiles back.
'If you are are looking for my father - The village Captain (think 'chief') - he isn't here right now. He is fishing. He will be home soon after he catches the most beautiful fish. Do you like fish?'
Grinning and filled with exciting thoughts of having fresh fish for dinner, Rose nods her head vigorously.
'Then let's sit and wait Papa. He won't be long. I'll braid your hair while we wait.'
Unable to resist the girls request, Rose agrees to this irritable relaxing moment.
Braiding with flowers, and a few songs later, the little girls Papa returns with coolers filled with fish.
'Papa, meet my new friend Rose! She says she likes fish. Do you have enough for her. She said she would like to buy a pretty fish from you. Can you show her what you caught.'
Papa nods, and Rose happily handles the fish. 'Your daughter is right. You do have beautiful fish. May I have 1 yellow fin tuna for my family?'
'Of course. Maybe you should take two so you have enough for the week?'
Happily Rose agrees. 'Magkano sir? - What is your price?'
'Two fish weigh five kilos (11 pounds). So the price is 1,000 pesos (about US$22).'
Being a natural negotiator, Rose counters - 'Make it P800 pesos and I'll buy from you every week.'
'But my fish are so fresh and pretty. Can you find it in your heart to pay 900 pesos?'
'I will give you 900 pesos if you add 1 piece of squid.'
... and with smile and a handshake, the deal is sealed. It's Like Winning the Lottery.
