A Fiesta - Education Through the Belly - Even the Guests Learn How to be Filipino

Fiesta Ngayon was celebrated at Sacred Heart School in Alcantara as a way to teach the students how to not only eat a healthy diet, but how to:
  • Welcome guests into your home
  • How to offer them a beverage or a meal
  • How to prepare and present a meal
  • How to engage in conversation and entertain your guests
  • How to thank your guests for visiting
What an amazing surprise this was to me, because this is something I was never taught in the schools that I attended, but this is being taught in all the grade levels at Sacred Heart School.

When Rose and I entered the school, we were amazed with the presentations. I mean look at this food. It reminds me of being at a cruise ship buffet! I was informed by the students they could have made a grander presentation if they had more table space, but each class was limited to what they could use. Needless to say, we were impressed.

As you can see, Rose is excited to start tasting the variety of food.
(Sorry Hon, we need to wait for the mayor to arrive before you can taste anything).

Luckily for us, the mayor arrived at 11:50am and the feasting at the fiesta began with cheers of gastronomical excitement.

Lucky for us, we got to attend 2 different tastings: 1 in our daughter's classroom, and the other in my niece's classroom.

As our bellies filled beyond their normal limits, we learned that it was entertainment time. I smiled because I know that the Filipino culture usually has excellent forms of entertainment: Tinkling Dancing, Cultural Dancing, and Singing. Today it would be singing.

'Sir Greg, since you are the only foreigner here, can you demonstrate how to sing a song for us?'

Rose smiles, hands me the mic as she punches a few numbers into the foreboding karaoke machine. 'He's been practicing, so he'll sing Zombie by The Cranberries.'

I don't know if it was part of the hospitality training, but people gathered outside the classroom door, and the people began to clap and cheer... Then when I finished, my score appeared - 100! I was shocked.

Then Rose punches in more numbers, but this time it's her favorite duet - 'Bring Me to Life' by Evanescence. Obviously she sings the female part while I sing the male part. As we begin to sing, the growing crowd in the hallway starts overflowing into the classroom. More cheering... and another '100' score.

'Sing another!' the crowd chants. I look at Rose and suggest we better share the microphone. She agrees and we retreat while people are asking us to join them for quick selfies. Cordially we smile. Because we are learning too! We are learning about hospitality, good food and entertaining... even when we never expected to be the entertainment.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to the Philippines?

MANILA – (As of July 2016) Nationals from 158 countries can spend more time in the Philippines as the government extends the visa-free privilege for up to 30 days.

"This move will hopefully encourage more tourists and investors to visit and stay in the Philippines by removing the need for them to report to immigration offices for a stay of up to a month. It will also give them more flexibility in planning and managing their schedules," said Assistant Secretary Jaime Victor Ledda of the Office of Consular Affairs.

Beginning August 1, the previous period of 21 days will be extended to 30 days. The initiative, a product of inter-agency coordination among the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Justice (DOJ), Bureau of Immigration (BI) and National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA), aims to facilitate the entry and stay of foreign nationals who plan to engage in tourism activities or explore the Philippines as an investment destination.

Qualified foreign nationals who intend to avail of the visa-free privilege only need to present a national passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the contemplated stay and an onward ticket.

A list of the countries eligible for the visa-free privilege may be obtained from the DFA website at https://www.dfa.gov.ph/index.php/site-administrator/visa-information.
