My Idea for the Best 2018 New Years Resolution! (but 1st... How Cold is it where you are today?)

12/31/2017

Comments

2018 is Approaching Fast. What will you do differently to improve Your Life in 2018? I have some beneficial Questions and Answers on How You can Make 2018 an even better year. Consider these questions & ideas for The Best 2018 New Years Resolution.

Question 1
: 'How cold is it where you are?' (please answer in the comments below).

Here on the island the temperature will be between 75-79 degrees F (25-27C) with a cool tropical breeze from the Northeast.

When asked (Question 2) 'Do you ever miss the snow?' I have to answer 'I hate the cold. I hate the cold. I hate the cold. (I say it 3 times because I want you to know I truly hate the cold temperatures). The cold weather feels painful to me.

But on the island, I never think of the frigid weather of the USA or Europe. Not even for an instant. It's because I enjoy knowing that when I wake up in the morning, I will be putting on my shorts, my t-shirt and be comfortable walking barefoot on the beach.

Question 3: Does this sound like something You want to do?
If this sounds like something you might be interested in doing, then make your New Years Resolution to visit Tablas Island in 2018 (or a nearby island). When you do, let us know. If the sunset & surf align, you might be able to join us on one of our yacht adventures, or paramotoring between the islands, or hiking to hidden waterfalls, or kiteboarding in the warm water, or finding a private lagoon for a picnic. There's lots to do and some unique places to stay. Island Life is Awesome!  If you need more reasons for coming to Tablas Island, then look at the photos at the top of the page.

How to Watch Sports & Bowl Games when Outside the USA

12/30/2017

I guess college football is one of my many passions, so when the games are on, I try to watch them. Unfortunately, we don't get many games televised LIVE here in Asia. So the problem is 'How do I watch sports & Bowl games when outside the USA?'. The solution is getting simpler with technology.
Before I tell you what I did, I want to share a story. One of my good friends moved from the USA, met a nice lady, got married, had a few babies, but then he couldn't take it any longer, and he did something drastic. In 2016, he sold everything... then packed up his family and moved home so he could watch his favorite professional football teams LIVE on TV.

Really?
Yes. he really did this.
There are numerous affordable options that he could have chosen:
  • Slingbox
  • TiVo
  • ESPN app
  • and many others
But, he instead chose an extreme way to tune in his favorite pro teams - moving back to the USA.
My problem was that I not only wanted to watch the games, but I also wanted to enjoy it with my friends back in the States. So my solution to watching the football games outside the USA is simple:
  1. Call my friends on Skype or Facetime
  2. Have them turn on their TV
  3. Face their phone's, pad's or computer's camera toward the TV
  4. and watch the games together.
It works!

The only difference is that I am watching the game by the warm ocean and palm trees while my friends are bundled up in layers of warm clothing surrounded by their snow covered  urban environment.

I guess some may not want to use my method of watching sporting events outside the USA (or wherever their home is), but I prefer my tropical, virtual 'man cave' to any other place on the planet.

New Year's Eve in the Philippines & Medical Malady Update

12/28/2017

Comments

New Year's Eve is approaching quickly and we are preparing for the celebration by stocking up on spherical shaped foods (for luck), spaghetti (for all Filipino special occasions, adult beverages & champagne (a global tradition), and music. Rose is practicing her guitar and hopefully after a few short lessons, she will be able to play us a recognizable tune.

Fortunately, we will not have freezing temperatures like my friends are experiencing in the USA. I was shocked to see 0 degrees (-15C) in my home town in Ohio. Like I mentioned, we are fortunate to have nice weather - warm weather where I can wear shorts and t-shirts year round. I love this weather.

Speaking of the weather. The recent weather (2 typhoons in 7 days) ended up somehow making me sick (sore throat and cough). Rose's father prepared me slices of fresh pineapple. I must say, Rose's family from the jungle is talented with knives. They can weild a machete or a short blade with precision and speed. I mean my pineapple looked like a work of art from a Royal cruise ship. Yummy. But what I found amusing was that, even though they are masters with machetes, they don't really grasp the understanding of the fork and spoon. Instead, it's using the fingers. So, not wanting to be like everyone else in this tropical paradise, I have adopted their practice as well. And it's Fun! Eating now is like being a kid. Just another reason for me to love living here. Island Life is Awesome!

Christmas Brings me Medicine from The Jungle

12/28/2017

As my friends & family are celebrating Christmas around the globe, I looked at the temperatures from my home town. Zero degrees Fahrenheit (-15 Celsius). I shiver at the thought. Even though we survived 2 typhoons in 7 days, the temperatures here are comfortable ~ 77 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius). The unfortunate affects of the typhoon are:
  • 2 holes in our roof (that cannot be repaired for a few weeks)
  • power interruptions (because limited sunshine for our solar power)
  • I developed a cough and sore throat... Ugh!
Fortunately we have Christmas helpers in the form of good neighbors and family visiting from the jungles of Leyte ~ Rose's parents. My mother-in-law is assisting with efforts around the inside of the house, and my father-in-law is doing the heavy labor outside ~ fallen trees, recovering our livestock, and retrieving water. It is obvious that they have an unbelievably strong work ethic and stamina. I'm envious! (especially because my father-in-law has the lean body of a teenager). Rose tells me it's motivation for me to get back into the gym. But before I can return to the gym, I have to fight off the tropical malady from the typhoon ~ my sore throat and cough.

As luck would have it, my wife's parents are decendants from doctors. Well... sort of doctors. Here in the remote regions of the Philippines, they are better known as: witch doctors, medicine men, herbal doctors, homeopathic medical experts.
As I complain about my sore throat, I call in sick for work, and this causes Rose to expresses genuine concern. 'How serious is this?'

'Well, it hurts to talk, it hurts to swallow, and I'm coughing'.

She leaves the room and comes back in with her parents. They look at me, and then they make a guttural sound to Rose. Rose nods her head. 'We'll be back,' and she leads them out of the house and into the farm.

While they are away, I can hear the unique sound of a machete hacking away at something. Oh, I really hope they are not bringing me a butchered animal.

Ten minutes later they return with arms full of leaves and sticks.

'What's this?' I ask.

'It's going to be your medicine'.

'Whew, I was imagining you were going to do a Voodoo ceremony with a
 chicken'.

'Your funny. I think you've been watching to many movies'.
They point to a chair and tell me to wait inside the house while they go outside to build a fire and begin brewing their 'potion'. By the way, they are not using a witch's cauldron. Instead they are using a pot from our kitchen. Although, I think the witch's cauldron would be a very cool affect.
Awhile later my wife and her parents present me with their potions: an herbal tea and salve for my throat.

'Mmm, this is surprisingly delicious... and i can feel the soreness going away. Is this all I have to do - drink tea and rub this salve on my throat?'

'No. Mom says I need to give you an herbal massage for the next week as well. The massage will rub away any hiding ailments in your muscles. Will this be OK with you?'

I smile and nod my head. 'If this is what the doctors order, then who am I to complain'.

I mean, why should I complain? I am going to get a massage every night from my beautiful wife.

I don't know what you think, but this is the best prescription I have every been prescribed. Island Life is Awesome with Jungle Medicine from my family.

Paradise is Not a Place... It's a Place & Experience Enhanced by Emotions

Today We Found Paradise.... Again!
It's easy to believe we found paradise again because of where we are living:
  • a beautiful tropical island
  • the bluest sea
  • wonderful weather
  • fantastic people
  • bountiful happiness & laughter

But what I came to realise today is that Paradise is not a specific place. But rather, paradise is the emotional feeling created by the pleasing experiences while at a place.

Today we found paradise while on an EXPEDition with
 Philippines Sailing Tours.

Today our expedition was shared with Rose's parents. They are from the 'boondocks' (the mountain region) of Leyte, Philippines. (If you are interested in learning more about the 'Boondocks', then you can read about it in 'Like Winning the Lottery')

Our EXPEDition involved riding a dune buggy to a remote beach that is normally accessed by sea ONLY. Fortunately, we had access to the only dune buggy on the island. Therefore we could bounce across precarious boulders, fallen trees, muddy crevasses to reach a remote slice of paradise.

What comes to mind when I think of Paradise is:
  • Pristine Beaches
  • Exclusivity and No Crowds
  • Natural Beauty
  • Kind and Gentle People
  • Excellent weather
  • a Unique Experience of Activity, Food and Interaction

Today's paradise is at fishing village.

The beach is untouched by modern resorts and amenities. The white beaches are raw with beauty and devoid of society. The water is crystal clean and warm.  And we love it's simplicity - sharing music from hand made guitars, vocals from talented children, and laughter from our attempts to sing.
Picture
While sipping our robust village coffee, we rediscovered a primal ideal - the love for all life. For people, for plants, for pets, and for the animals used as food (fish from the sea and live stock that rested freely around our feet as we sipped our strong island coffee).  All are cared for, and all are blessed - in greetings, at meals and in good byes.
Picture
Another thing we discovered, is the simple pleasure of watching the azure blue ocean, listening to the birds in the coconut trees, feeling the refreshing sea breeze, and experiencing the genuine kindness of the curious villagers.

Will we return here? I hope so.

Will I tell others where this place is located? I am not sure. I don't want to change a thing.
