Many of you already know that my wife comes from a long line of family of doctors - Homeopathic 'Herbal' Doctors - and they swear by the positive affects from the various natural foods available here in the Philippines. Various fruit, vegetables and meats can be good for stamina (for male organs), infections, burns, allergies, skin conditions, and Cancer. Many of these doctors stress consuming the fresh and organic fruit and juice (versus the processed products).

I want to share what I discovered in hopes that it may help someone personally or stimulate further research and development.

The Guyabano Tree & Fruit
The Guyabano tree, its fruit, leaves, stem, bark may be a natural cancer cell killer.

Medicinal Uses of Guyabano
Guyabano has been used as folkloric herbal medicine in many regions thought the world. It is considered to be antispasmodic, sudorific and emetic. A decoction (boiling in water) of guyabano leaves is used to kill bedbugs and head lice.

To reduce fever, a decoction of leaves can be taken internally or the leaves added to bathing water also has the same effect. The crushed fresh leaves are also applied on skin eruptions for faster healing. A poultice of young guyabano leaves is applied on the skin to alleviate rheumatism and other skin infections like eczema. Applied during the healing of wounds, this can result in less or no skin scars. The decoction can also be used as a wet compress on swollen feet and other inflammations.

The juice of the fruit is taken orally as a herbal remedy for urethritis, haematuria and liver ailments.

Studies are underway by leading medical institutes, universities and pharmaceutical companies of the healing properties of guyabano against cancers. Initial findings show that certain compounds and chemicals extracted from guyabano leaves, seeds, fruit and bark appear to kill cancer cells while leaving normal cells remain unaffected.

A scientific research published in the Journal of Natural Products in 1996, stated that the bioactivity-directed fractionation of the seed resulted in the isolation of a new compound (cis-annonacin) that is selectively cytotoxic to colon adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29) in which it was far more potent than Adriamycin.
Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections. Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment. Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life.

The source of this information is just as stunning.
Extracts from the tree were shown to: Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer.
What’s more, unlike chemotherapy, laboratory tests shows that the compound extracted from the Guyabano tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells. It does not harm healthy cells! Various parts of the tree–including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds–have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indians in South America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis.

The results showed that Guyabano’s “leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells.

In many independent laboratory tests has proven that Guyabano may be a potent cancer killer.

The most significant part of the report is that Guyabano (Annona Muricata) was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. Unlike chemotherapy, which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.

A study at Purdue University found that the leaves from the Guyabano tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers.

For a long time the fruit, leaves and bark from the tropical Guyabano tree have been used as a natural medicine for many illnesses. And now it also seems to be a natural cancer cell killer.

The Guyabano Tree
The Guyabano tree (latin name: Annona muricata) is a low-branching and bushy but slender tree, which can reach a height of 7.5-9 m. The large evergreen leaves are smooth and glossy and have a dark green upper surface. The fruits are usually oval or heart-shaped and 10-30 cm long and up to 15 cm in width. The skin of the fruit is leathery and covered with curved, soft, pliable spines. When the tips of these spines can break off easily, then the fruit is ripe enough to eat. The inside of the fruit is cream-colored and is divided into segments. Closely-packed segments are seedless and other segments have a single oval, smooth, hard black seed. One piece of large fruit can contain a dozen to 200 seeds or even more.
It tastes slightly acidic and it is used as food in different ways. For example you can spoon the flesh out or make sherbets and drinks out of it. From the leaves you can make tea.

The Guyabano tree is a tropical tree found in the warmest tropical areas in North and South America, in the Amazon and in Asia (Tablas Island, Philippines - www.PiliNutFarms.com).

Natural medicine
The bark, leaves, fruit, roots, and fruit seeds of the Guyabano tree know a long history of many medicinal uses.
-     The fruit and juice is used against worms and parasites, to cool down fevers, to increase mother’s milk after childbirth. It can also be used for diarrhea or inflammation in the bowels as a drying agent.
-  The seeds can be crushed and then used against internal or external parasites, head lice, and worms.
-     The leaves are used as a sedative and a soporific (inducer of sleep) in the West Indies and Peruvian Andes when drank as a tea. This infusion is also used to relief pain or for antispasmodic purposes. For liver problems a leaf tea is used in the Brazilian Amazon.
-         The roots and bark can be of aid for diabetes, but can also be used as a sedative.

As you can see there are many uses of the Guyabano tree. These are just a few ways how the Guyabano tree can be of aid in your health. Next to all of these uses, it now also seems to help against cancer. Research has found many biologically active compounds in the Guyabano tree, and one of these compounds is able to destroy cancer cells.

The cure for cancer may lies in a tree
The Guyabano tree consists of many chemicals, but what makes the Guyabano tree special is that this tree contains a natural compound named ‘acetogenins’. Research has found that this compound can slow the growth of tumor cells and be toxic to tumor cells without harming healthy cells. Especially the latter is a problem of recent anticancer drugs. Chemotherapy kills growing cells, bad (the cancer cells) and good (the healthy cells). The best cure for cancer is a product that can target only the cancer cells. And this is just exactly what the natural compound found in the Guyabano tree does.

The tree produces these ‘acetogenins’ in the leaves, stem and bark. What you can do is drink the extracts of the tree and this may help you fight against cancer.

Chemical compound
What everyone would like is to make these acetogenins in big quantities, to help everyone. However, the natural ‘acetogenins’ are very complex in structure and is not easily to make by chemists. To make it easier to produce large amounts of this medicine, research has been done to find the active parts of the compound against cancer. If the active parts can be found, the medicine would be easier to produce and be more available to everyone. Unfortunately, scientists have not been able to find the active parts of the Guyabano tree.

Until then, you can turn to the natural acetogenins and drink the tea, juice or use the supplements.

How does it work?
Oberlies et al (1995) researched the capability of acetogenins to block, or inhibit, the cell growth of tumor cells. They tested this on several cell types in vitro; cancerous cells from mice and humans as well as non-cancerous cells from the intestinal tract of rats. Results showed that the more acetogenins was added with the cancerous cells, the more the cell growth was blocked. In addition, the non-cancerous healthy cells were not affected by the acetogenins and the cell growth was not blocked. These findings can indicate that acetogenins can selectively block the cell growth of tumor cells, while the healthy cells remain unaffected with minimal toxicity by this compound.

In breast cancer the cancer gene ‘epidermal growth factor receptor’ (EGFR) is frequently overexpressed.  Therefore, this cancer gene is a possible target for breast cancer therapy. A study by Dai et al (2011) used a Guyabano fruit extract and the extract inhibited or blocked the expression of the EGFR gene and this resulted in an inhibition of 32% of the growth of breast cancer cells. The non-cancerous breast cells were not affected by the fruit extract.

In 1997 Oberlies et al researched the ability of the acetogenins to block the cell growth of specific tumor cells, adriamycin resistant human mammary adenocarcinoma cells. These breast tumor cells are resistant to treatment with adriamycin, vincristine and vinblastine. All three are anti-tumor drugs. Because these tumor cells can not be treated with the drugs, the tumor is called multidrug resistant (MDR). The research group used various acetogenins derived from the Guyabano. The ones with a specific structure (a stereochemistry of threo-trans-threo-trans-erythro) were the most potent acetogenin and had 250 times the potency of adriamycin. This indicates that acetogenins may have a chemotherapeutical potential, also against MDR tumors.

Not only a "cancer cell killer"
Besides being helpful to fight against cancer, Guyabano may also help with other conditions and diseases.

Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder where the patient remains to have high blood sugar levels because the body is not able to produce insulin (type 1 diabetes), or the (pancreatic) cells in the body does not react to the produced insulin (type 2 diabetes). Adeyemi et al (2010) studied the effects of the extracts of Guyabano on diabetes mellitus. Thirty rats were divided in three groups; a control group, a group of rats with induced diabetes and a group of rats with induced diabetes and treatment of Guyabano extracts. After the treatment the pancreatic cells were examined and the group treated with Guyabano resulted in more pancreatic cells compared to the untreated group. These results suggest that Guyabano may help in the regeneration of pancreatic cells, and therefore in the treatment against diabetes.

The same research group of Adeyemi et al (2008) also did a study where they examined the effects of Guyabano extracts on the blood sugar levels of induces diabetic rats. Results showed that the rats with induced diabetes had an average blood sugar level of 21.64 mmol. The rats with induced diabetes and which were treated with Guyabano extracts showed an average blood sugar level of 4.22 mmol. This is a decrease in elevated blood sugar levels of five times. The Guyabano extracts shows in this study again that it may be useful for patients with diabetes.

A different research group, Adewole et al (2008), treated induced diabetic rats with Guyabano extracts and examined the tissues involved with diabetes. Results show, as well as the research group mentioned above, that Guyabano extracts led to a decrease in elevated blood sugar. Additionally, they found that Guyabano may also have protective and beneficial effects on the tissues involved with diabetes.

Pain and inflammation
In animal models the effects of Guyabano extracts were investigated regarding to pain and inflammation. After giving oral doses of Guyabano extracts to mice, Vieira de Sousa et al (2010) recorded the reaction time of the mice on a hot plate. The mice which received the Guyabano extracts showed an increase in reaction time compared to the control mice. This means that it took longer for the Guyabano treated mice to feel the hot plate, and that the Guyabano can help reduce pain or reduce sensitivity to painful stimuli.

Additionally, the same research group treated mice with swollen paws with Guyabano extracts. When paws are swollen, there is an excess of fluid in the paws and there is indication that there is inflammation in the paws. At a site of inflammation, immune cells (leukocytes) migrate or move to this site. This treatment resulted in a smaller volume of paws and a reduction of immune cell migration. From this there can be concluded that Guyabano extracts can also have anti-inflammatory properties.

 Antibacterial effect
Vieira et al (2010) investigated the antibacterial effects of Guyabano extracts on bacteria. They found that Guyabano extracts worked against the following bacteria: Staphylococcus Aureus and Vibrio Cholerae. S. Aureus is a bacterium which can lie on the skin and cause skin infections (such as pimples), or more life threatening diseases like pneumonia. Cholerea is a bacterium which causes cholera. The symptoms of cholera are diarrhea and vomiting.

Guyabano and blood pressure
Animal studies have shown that Guyabano can have hypotensive activities, which means that it can result in an abnormal low blood pressure. Guyabano can also be used as a vasodilator (widening of the blood vessels, resulting in a lower blood pressure). Caution should therefore be taken when using Guyabano, especially when you have a low blood pressure, or if you take antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure lowering drugs).

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a major risk factor when it comes to the development of cardiovascular diseases. Guyabano may be helpful to reduce the blood pressure. In the West-Indies a research group investigated this on rats. All rats had a normal blood pressure and Guyabano was administered to the animals. Chukwuemeka et al. found that the blood pressure in these rats reduced significantly in a dose-dependent way.

This may indicate that Guyabano may also reduce the blood pressure in humans. However, this has not been researched yet. All research at this moment on Guyabano is done on cell lines (in vitro) or on animals.

Guyabano may be useful to treat a high blood pressure, but take caution when you have a normal blood pressure. A blood pressure which is too low (hypotension) is not healthy and can even be dangerous.

Isla Hopping to Cresta de Gallo

THE PHILIPPINES Is being recognized by various travel sites in the worldwide web to be growing as a top tourist spot. In 2013, the country was listed among the popular destinations in the Conde Nast Traveler Choice. In particular, Boracay Island was voted as one of the best beaches in Asia in 2013. And even before that, the island consistently made it into the top three in the awards for the best beaches in the world. In 2014, another island, Palawan, was included in the list of the 30 top islands in the world: Readers’ Choice Awards in the Conde Nast Traveler online survey. This is an added recognition after Palawan was chosen as the home to one of the new seven natural wonders of the world – the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River.

But Boracay and Palawan, despite their popularity, are not the only islands in the country with beautiful white sand beaches and crystal water. In fact, there are other more stunning and unexploited places that both local and foreign tourists have yet to explore and enjoy. Cresta de Gallo (aka Isla) is on top of the list – located at the heart of the Philippines!

Geographically, Isla is virtually invisible in the map and it is situated at the southern tip of Sibuyan Island, in the Province of Romblon. Romblon is known for its high-quality marble products and its majestic Mt. Guiting-Guiting Natural Park. But Sibuyan Island is also the historical site of WW2’s Battle of Sibuyan Sea where majority of the Americans’ and Japanese’s battleships were deployed, including the world famous Musashi, the biggest Japanese battleship which sunk in the moonlight on October 24, 1944. Last March, an expedition was organized by Paul G. Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. Together with his research team, he broadcasted a live-stream tour of the wreckage ofMusashi in Sibuyan Sea.

As a rare jewel of nature, Isla is a place where you can really enjoy the blue crystal clear waters. The white sand massages your feet as you walk on the long stretch of sand bar with pulverized sea shells and corals. The islet, once a victim of man-made destruction that threatened its coral system and marine life with illegal dynamite fishing, is now fully recovered with an abundance of fish, starfish, seaweeds, and sea cucumbers flourishing in the area. Because it is not as popular as Boracay (five hours away), its quiet beaches offer serenity and much better unbothered scenery under water. Even with no source of potable water and permanent beach structures (except for one resident house for the family guarding the island), it is a paradise that awaits every one!

If you are in the area and have some flexibility in your schedule, you can also add some nature-filled wonder into your itinerary by visiting other natural attractions of Sibuyan. Dubbed the “Galapagos of Asia”, you can find the cleanest river system in the country which also provides the power supply for the entire island. You can also climb Mt. Guiting-Guiting, considered as one of the densest forests in the Philippines. The mountain’s difficult features save it for only the experienced lot of climbers, but its highest peak is one of the most breath-taking sites one can reach.

How does one reach the islet from Metro Manila? Take a bus or hire a van from any major cities going to Batangas City Port. From the port, ride a ship (Montenegro or Navios shipping lines) going to Sibuyan Island (which takes a total of 12-13 hours with two stop-overs in Tablas Island and Romblon). The long travel is not really boring, as you enjoy the seascapes of Romblon and by chance will be able to witness playful dolphins swimming at the sides of the ship.

In addition, it can be reached by motor boats from the mainland of Sibuyan. With an hour of sailing to Isla, you can also enjoy the panoramic view of the mystic saw-toothed landscape of Mt. Guiting-Guiting. Isla is also accessible with commercial motor boats leaving Boracay on a regular basis (between 4-5 hours travel time, depending on the weather) and via Tablas Island with Philippine Airlines’ three-times-a-week flight schedule or 2Go Travel’s’ weekly trips.

ULTIMATELY, YOU CAN always enjoy these beautiful islands at the heart of the Philippines where the sun, sand, and sea meet every day!

Island Weddings.... with the Governor of Nevada?

11/19/2015

Picture

Island Wedding and I meant to say with possibly the next Governor of Nevada.

How did we end up at this beautiful island wedding in the first place?
First off, an island wedding can be fantastic if you have it in the Philippines. Why?
Dresses, catering, wedding halls are extremely affordable. But what's also fantastic are the spectacular locations where you can have the wedding ceremony. Think about it: a morning sunrise wedding on the beach or an evening sunset on the beach? How about a ceremony in the surf, under a waterfall or under the sea? Oh, don't let me forget. 'Yes' you can still have a wedding in a church... or City Hall. So the Philippines is a fantastic place for having an island wedding.

Let me get back to my original question, 'How did we end up at a beautiful island wedding?' The other afternoon after Rose and I ran an errand for a friend in the USA, we stopped at Binucot Beach Resort for a sunset cocktail (by the way, this is a great place for a sunset wedding ceremony). Lucky for Rose and I, Anna was making one of her specialty drinks that we really enjoy. The drink is nicknamed 'To-Take-my-Clothes-Off-and-watch-the-Sunset'. Why is it named that? We will tell that story in our FREE newsletter. Let's get back to the story....

As we sat down and ordered our drinks, a good friend of ours from Austria introduced us to his guest, another Austrian (who happens to be a businessman from Las Vegas). 'Greg & Rose, meet Dietmar Scherf and his fiancé Sarah. They are getting married on Thursday in Alcantara.' Greetings were exchanged, beverages were consumed, the sun was setting, photos were taken, and it created a perfect atmosphere for creating a new friendship.

'Greg and Rose, would you please come to my wedding Thursday? I would really like it if you two would be our guests. What do you say? It starts at 2pm.'

'Of course Dietmar. We'll be there early so we can get a good seat.'

At 1:40pm on Thursday we arrive at the church. We walk in... and the only person there is Dietmar. 'Greg, Rose, I'm so glad you are here. I forgot my corsage in my hotel, can you do me a big favor. Can you go back to my hotel and get it for me. I would do it, but I don't have any transportation?'

'Not a problem. That's what friends are for.'

Rose and April take a seat in the rear of the church - their favorite seats in church - and I dash off to Dietmar's hotel. Fifteen minutes later, I return with the corsage as guests are just beginning to file in.

Picture

'Thank you my new friend for this favor.' As I help him pin on the corsage, Dietmar calls to a guest filing in, 'Ed, please come here and meet my friend. Greg and Rose, please meet the Mayor of Alcantara,' and greeting are exchanged.

'Greg and Rose, nice to meet you. How do you know my friend and the future Governor of Nevada?' We smile and explain that our friendship is the result of the cocktails, the sunset and the atmosphere of this tropical island paradise.

At 2:53pm (it's still 2 o'clock according to Filipino Time) and the wedding begins. Seventy-five minutes later as April tells me she's hungry and Rose is returning from the call of nature, we hear 'You may kiss the bride!'

Cheers erupt and then all the guests file out before the happy couple can take their first step off the wedding stage. 'Where are they going?' I ask Rose.

'Maybe they are rushing off to the reception so they can get a good seat. I know I'm hungry.' Needless to say, I insist that we wait for the new bride and groom to come down the aisle so we congratulate them.

'Greg, can you do us another favor?'

'Sure, what do you need.'

'Can you drive us to the reception? If not, then I guess we'd have to walk.'
We all laugh and minutes later I drive to the front of the church where we all pile into our dirty 1992 Toyota Surf (think 4Runner). After a quick Gatorade stop, we pull up to the front of the reception hall. April has negotiated a deal with Sarah where April can help Sarah carry the train of her beautiful gown into the hall.

As the bride and groom work their way to the front of the hall to sit for the reception, Rose, April and I work our way to the last table in the back of the hall - happy that we are able to find a seat. After settling into our seats after the blessing is completed, one of the bridesmaids comes to our table. 'Excuse me, but this is not your table.'

'No problem. Our mistake. Please excuse our rudeness.' And we get up ready to leave...

'No, you don't understand. The bride and groom have reserved a table for you up front by them. You are their honored guests. Please follow me.' Up to the front of the hall we go to a table that is beautifully adorned with more than we could have ever imagined. 'If there is anything you need, please let me know. Thank you for being here today.' I look at Rose and April, and I can see the excitement in the smiles.

The reception is a 'Hit', and we all have a great time. So much so, that we are in the last group of guests to leave. But as we are about to walk out the door, I hear Dietmar. 'Greg, Rose, April! Can I ask you a question?'

'Sure.'

'Can you give us a lift to our hotel? If not, we can always walk.'

'Give me a minute, and I'll retrieve the enchanted carriage,' I joke.

'Enchanted carriage?' Sarah asks.

'Think Cinderella,' I smile. 'This is your magical night. It's possible your ferry godmother has let me borrow her Enchanted carriage. If not, then you're going to have to settle for a ride in the back of our Toyota Surf.'

We all laugh on the way to their hotel, because we have enjoyed the wedding, the fun with friends and not riding in the back of an enchanted carriage.

A Possible Solution to Power Outages in The Philippines

11/18/2015

When I lived in the USA, having electricity 99.999% of the year was expected. We never expected to go without electricity. Here in the Philippines - even with the best intentions - this is not the case. Even with this being the 21st century, not all of the Philippines has access to electricity. My wife Rose experienced never having electricity growing up (in the jungles of Leyte), and for obvious reasons as you can imagine. But when I chose to live here, I made it extremely clear that we would be living in an area that provided electricity. Maybe I should have been more clear. Maybe I should have said, "We need to have electricity 99.999% of the year." Instead, I left out that small caveat.

What do I mean by that? Hmmm? Let me put it this way... even though we have power companies that produce electricity, the Philippines still has frequent power outages. Power outages that can last for several minutes to up to several days. Sometimes they are caused by typhoons ( we average about 20 per season ), but other outages, I am not sure why they happen.

So today, Rose and I took a field trip to the island's utility company in an effort to learn how we could work around some of these power outage issues. Walking into TIELCO, Rose was greeted by a super sharp person by the name of Dennis. He answered many of our questions and he further went on to discuss the future power production process - Solar Power. It's possible that solar power will add to the island's power grid, but Dennis brought up something that was very interesting.

What did Dennis bring up? He suggested we install a solar power system at our residence, and if we produce surplus power, then we can turn around and sell it  to the utility company. So instead of us paying for electricity every month, the electric company pays us for the electricity. Wow, that's a change that I really like!
So when Rose and I finished our enlightening conversation with Dennis at the electric company, we excitedly talked about having a solar power generating system at our home next year. I don't think it will be a solar farm (harvesting electricity instead of harvesting crops), but we'll create more than enough to power our home and hopefully help the electric company meet a small portion of its demands :-)

Stay tuned for more news on our solar design, and we'll include pictures, our thought process, the progress and more.

“Genuine and Heartwarming Story!” November 12, 2014
Jeff Wenzel.  At a time when many expats are seeking a better and happier life…. along
come Greg and Rose! Their story will have you crying one moment and laughing the next!… I could not put the book down until I was finished (Both times!)…It is a well written story that details some of the hardships and rewards of two people looking for happiness in this place we like to call paradise. Greg’s enthusiasm and positive attitude have defiantly gotten him a winning ticket in life’s lottery…. We are proud to call Rose and Greg both neighbor and friend and look forward to the sequel.

“Theirs is a fun filled, touching story of adventure” November 19, 2014
by Sarina Brown
I read the entire book in one sitting. I felt as if I was sitting around a campfire hearing the stories straight from the author. After reading the book I feel as if I know this couple personally. Theirs is a fun filled, touching story of adventure, play, love and creating a life of freedom and dreams come true. I am looking forward to the next book and want even more logistics about making the move to paradise on how the average person can actually do it.

“Rose has a great sense of humor and an innocence that entices you …” November 18, 2014
by Greg L.
You know, I have to admit it was not what I expected at all. I read it on a flight to Europe today and found myself laughing out loud! Rose has a great sense of humor and an innocence that entices you to read more about her and Greg’s adventures in the Philippines. I loved the chapter describing the first time Greg met Rose’s family, in Leyte!! Too funny! Nice job overall!

The Freshest Seafood on the Planet from Island Fishermen

Do you know anyone who enjoys fresh Lobster, Shrimp, Calamari, and Fish?
If you said 'Yes', then I think Rose found two of the World's best places for buying the freshest and most delicious fish on the planet - Looc Port and Ginawian Beach on Tablas Island, Philippines. What makes it even more special are the friendly fishermen and their families who help you with their selection.
The other morning Rose ventured to the undiscovered beaches of Ginawian, and she was immediately greeted by several playful children enjoying the morning surf. The kids thinking Rose was another kid - Yes, Rose looks like a little kid - asked her to join them in playing games in the water. With a smile, Rose shook her head no and suggested another time. Unaffected by her choice, the kids went back to their laughing and splashing games in the turquoise water.
Enjoying the sea breeze, Rose heard a soft voice from behind a coconut tree - 'Magandang Umaga' - Good Morning. To Rose's delight, it was an adorable shy, little girl - apparently to small to play with the other kids in the water.
'Kumustaka?' - How are you?
And Rose shared a smile with the shy, little girl.
'I am good,' she smiles back.
'If you are are looking for my father - The village Captain (think 'chief') - he isn't here right now. He is fishing. He will be home soon after he catches the most beautiful fish. Do you like fish?'
Grinning and filled with exciting thoughts of having fresh fish for dinner, Rose nods her head vigorously.
'Then let's sit and wait Papa. He won't be long. I'll braid your hair while we wait.'
Unable to resist the girls request, Rose agrees to this irritable relaxing moment.
Braiding with flowers, and a few songs later, the little girls Papa returns with coolers filled with fish.
'Papa, meet my new friend Rose! She says she likes fish. Do you have enough for her. She said she would like to buy a pretty fish from you. Can you show her what you caught.'
Papa nods, and Rose happily handles the fish. 'Your daughter is right. You do have beautiful fish. May I have 1 yellow fin tuna for my family?'
'Of course. Maybe you should take two so you have enough for the week?'
Happily Rose agrees. 'Magkano sir? - What is your price?'
'Two fish weigh five kilos (11 pounds). So the price is 1,000 pesos (about US$22).'
Being a natural negotiator, Rose counters - 'Make it P800 pesos and I'll buy from you every week.'
'But my fish are so fresh and pretty. Can you find it in your heart to pay 900 pesos?'
'I will give you 900 pesos if you add 1 piece of squid.'
... and with smile and a handshake, the deal is sealed. It's Like Winning the Lottery.

6 Tips on How to be a Change-Maker by Chris Raymond

6 Insights on How to Be a Change-Maker Bits of wisdom from groundbreaking entrepreneurs and idealists in speeches, books and interviews
Chris Raymond

July 28, 2014 Some of the world’s most promising innovators share their secrets to creating improvements to our world—to being change-makers. These are their tips:
Lead the Way
“A leader anticipates and prepares for change,” says the innovator behind the LifeStraw water filter, Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen. That means staying abreast of technology, responding to issues that may present problems and adopting new strategies to adapt to market changes ahead of everyone else.
Think Big
“Fortune does favor the bold, and you’ll never know what you’re capable of if you don’t try,” says Sheryl Sandberg. As the Facebook COO discovered, that often involves putting yourself in unfamiliar situations and rating opportunity and self-education ahead of security. “If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat,” she adds. “Just get on!”
Ignore Convention
“Don’t be afraid to change the model,” says Reed Hastings. The CEO was roundly criticized for rushing to change Netflix’s business strategy in 2011, but his instincts were spot-on. Video streaming is the future, and his company is now a global leader in providing it. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg would no doubt approve. His advice?
Move fast and break things.
Sweep ’Em Off Their Feet
“Build something 100 people love,” says Airbnb’s Brian Chesky. “Not something 1 million people kind of like.” Real change only works if people follow your lead—and for that you need passionate fans.
Believe in Yourself
The best ideas often defy imagination. “If you don’t believe it, no one else is going to believe it,” says VICE’s Shane Smith. “But if you believe it and keep saying it, then slowly one person will believe you, then two, then three, then four….” Once they come around, you look like a genius.
Rethink the Way You Keep Score
“Doing good is good business,” says Andrew Hewitt. On his website GameChangers500.com, the business consultant argues that companies that strive to make the world a better place are more attractive to consumers than companies that simply chase profits. The best way to make the shift, he says, is to adopt new metrics: Start measuring your impact, not just your revenue.

What you can Learn from Driving in the Rain?

11/11/2015

Comments

Picture
I heard a story the other day of a man who was driving in the middle of a downpour. The rain came down in sheets and visibility was just terrible. The man was unsure if he should stop or keep going. Suddenly he spotted a set of taillights ahead of him and decided he’d simply follow them. They seemed to be going in the right direction, and it was a big comfort to know there was another person on the same journey. Well, he followed those taillights for what seemed like miles, until they suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. The man sat there, his windshield wipers pushing water aside furiously, wondering if the car had encountered a problem or hit an animal. Then, instead of moving again, the car’s taillights disappeared. Frustrated, the man began cursing to himself about the idiot in front of him who obviously didn’t care about those behind. About that time, someone knocked on the man’s car window.
He rolled the window down in the pouring rain to encounter a woman.
“What’s your problem?” the man asked.
“I was going to ask you the same thing,” she said.
“Well, I’m not the idiot who stopped in the middle of the road and turned off her lights,” the man snapped back.
“No,” the woman replied, “but you are the idiot who’s parked in my driveway.”
I love that story because it illustrates some of the key principles I’ve taught my entire life. First, nobody wants to go it alone. We all want to know that someone else is taking the journey with us, and we often prefer following someone who’s just a little ahead of us on the way. Second, and most importantly, whom we choose to follow is of the utmost importance. Many of us end up like the man in the story – we simply follow the first person that seems to be heading in the same direction. But that can leave us looking pretty foolish.
Mentors matter, and having the right mentor matters even more. You see, the right mentor expands your vision. They help you see farther, and stretch your horizons. They help you see more by uncovering your blind spots. And they help you see clearly to discover your best path to success.
That’s why I’ve chosen mentors at every step along my journey. I can’t see it all, I can’t know it all – and neither can you. We all need someone to help us in our pursuit of intentional growth, and the right mentor helps you take massive leaps forward.
Mentors do three things for you:
1. They know the way – so they have insights and wisdom born from experience.
2. They show the way – by generously applying their insight and wisdom to your specific situation.
3. They go the way – by walking with you through your own journey and helping you learn from your experiences.

9 Habits that Will Lengthen Your Life
Did you know that practicing a sport regularly can add 4 years to your life? Furthermore, it helps your heart health, lung functioning, and improves your mood.9 Habits that Will Lengthen Your Life
There are poor lifestyle habits that reduce your lifespan and influence the development of different diseases. The good news is there are also healthy habits that help your health, lengthen your life, and above all, improve your quality of life.
Keeping in mind that you only have one life and body, it is important to care for your health and maintain a lifestyle that can guarantee a good life for many years. If you still don’t know these healthy habits that can lengthen your life, we encourage you to keep reading to learn and apply them today.

Don’t eat too much
Experts recommend that you eat small portions of food spread throughout the day. It is best to eat 5 or 6 portions a day. Avoiding eating in excess is key to enjoying a healthy life, and of course, a healthy weight. Every time you prepare a meal, make sure you eat enough to not really feel hungry before it is time to eat again.

Having more Sex can help
An active sex life is key to enjoying good health and living longer. Sex helps self-esteem, releases positive hormones, burns calories, lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, improves sleep, and protects the heart. Experts recommend that you have sex 3 or more times per week. -->> http://goo.gl/sY7j8v

Don’t spend too much time in the sun
Excessive exposure to UV rays causes the skin to age prematurely, and also causes sunburns, irritations, and even skin cancer. While sun exposure is necessary, it is important to avoid over-exposure since it lowers your quality of life. It is recommended to always use sunblock on the face and the rest of the body. http://goo.gl/2fGngj

Have a social lifeHappiness
Different studies have shown that people who are always surrounded by friends and family have a lower risk of suffering from heart disease. Loneliness is a factor that may lead to depression, anxiety, stress, high cholesterol, and other conditions. Spending time with family and friends is extremely good for your health and helps you feel happier.

Drink a glass of wine a day
Even though alcohol consumption isn’t recommended for your health; experts have found that a glass of red wine a day is healthy, since it can help prevent heart attacks and even diabetes.

Eat fruits and vegetables
Eating fruits and vegetables regularly is essential for enjoying a better and longer life. Both fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other properties that help control weight as well as prevent and treat many diseases, detoxify the body, and maintain healthy, youthful skin, among other benefits.

Exercise
To enjoy good health and stay in good physical shape, exercise is the best tool and is, of course, recommended by experts. According to studies, practicing a sport can lengthen your life by 4 years, while simultaneously helping heart health, lung functioning, and even improving your mood. It is recommended to practice a sport and/or exercise at least 30 minutes a day.

Don’t smoke / No smoking
Smoking is one of the worst habits a person can have, since it not only reduces a lifespan, but also damages the quality of life of the person who smokes. This habit is one of the number one causes of death in the world, since it leads to lung cancer and other respiratory problems. Quitting smoking can be difficult but not impossible, and the benefits can be seen from the first day onwards, as the body begins to regain its health.

Reduce stress
We have all been exposed to certain amounts of stress in our daily lives. Even though most stress seems normal, experts have drawn attention to reasons why you should be more aware of this problem. According to studies, stress negatively affects mental, emotional, and physical health. It is recommended to combat stress and maintain a positive attitude without dwelling on situations you may have to face. Even though this may seem difficult, there are many ways to deal with this issue.

Veterans Day – Nov. 11, 2015 –
I'm Wishing all of my brothers and sisters in arms (past and present) a very happy Veteran's Day.
Thank you for your devotion to our freedom, and your endless and selfless sacrifice in keeping this great nation safe. It's an honor to have served with you.

In its original proclamation on Armistice Day, Congress spelled out the purpose for the commemoration:
Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and
Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and
Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples."

Other thoughts on Veterans Day, patriotism and courage:
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
--John F. Kennedy
"On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free." – Dan Lipinski
"Honoring the sacrifices many have made for our country in the name of freedom and democracy is the very foundation of Veterans Day." – Charles B. Rangel
"Honor to the soldier and sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country's cause. Honor, also, to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field and serves, as he best can, the same cause." - Abraham Lincoln
"Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened." – Billy Graham
"How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!" --Maya Angelou
"The young patriots now returning from war in Iraq and Afghanistan and other deployments worldwide are joining the ranks of veterans to whom America owes an immense debt of gratitude." – Steve Buyer
"This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave." --Elmer Davis
"Never give in — never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." --Winston Churchill
"My heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place—police, firefighters, and members of our armed forces."
--Sidney Sheldon
"I believe it is the nature of people to be heroes, given the chance." – James A. Autry
"Our veterans accepted the responsibility to defend America and uphold our values when duty called." – Bill Shuster
"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation." – George Washington
"Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world, but the Marines don't have that problem." – Ronald Reagan
"This year's Veterans Day celebration is especially significant as our country remains committed to fighting the War on Terror and as brave men and women are heroically defending our homeland." – John Doolittle
"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself. "
--Joseph Campbell
"Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul." -- Michel de Montaigne
"While we can never truly repay the debt we owe our heroes, the least we should do for our brave veterans is to ensure that the government takes a proactive approach to delivering the services and benefits they have earned, so they can access the care they need and so richly deserve." – Kristen Gillibrand
"Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him."- Dwight D. Eisenhower

'Kick Butt' - Personal Trainer for Yaw-Yan

11/11/2015

Comments

The other day, our friend Cynthia and her daughter Star were visiting us at home, and they told us about a new exercise  program they were doing called Yaw-Yan (sounds like Yow-Yawn). They explained how it's a hand-to-hand self-defense martial art created in the Philippines in the early 1970s, how it's being taught on our island, and they wanted to know if we wanted to try it out. Before I could answer,  my 83 pound wife (Rose)said, 'We're in! Let's do this!'

Two days later we go to Cynthia's home, located inside the resort compound of Cummings Highlands (www.cummingshighlands.com), and register for the class.

Class begins with stretching, strengthening exercises, and then right into punching and kicking training.
'This is Awesome, I Love it!' Rose laughs as she daintily pummels her much larger instructor.

Five minutes later we are breathing heaving and experiencing how out of shape we are. 'Ma'am Rose, Mister Greg, I think after 10 days you won't be so fat. Then you will be a much better fighter and athlete.'

Did I hear him right? Did the instructor just call us 'fat'? But he is right. We are not in top form, and we are not aerobically fit... but we will be!

Rose smiles at me, 'You look sexy in my eyes Hon.' - and she punches me in my paunch. 'Now let's get it on!'

Sparring, kicking, punching and heavy breathing continue for another 60 minutes before we conclude with a knife fighting demonstration.

'Wow, this is exciting! Thank you for letting us join this fun course with Cynthia and Star. Cynthia also told me that we should swim in her pool when we are done. She said that swimming and a glass of wine are good for the soul.' I smile and realize that we have just had another wonderful  experience in Paradise - I
to admit... our life is Like Winning the Lottery - It's filled with friendship, family bonding, invigorating experiences, in a beautiful stress-free environment. Maybe it's from all the vitamin sea we have here.
